At Om Home & Garden, we’re often asked: What makes a handcrafted cabinet or table different from a similar-looking piece at a large furniture chain?
The answer is simple – and layered. It’s about craftsmanship, material honesty, sustainability, attention to every small detail, and the connection to the people who make each piece.
1. Every Piece Personally Selected
We travel to India regularly and select each piece ourselves – directly, on site. We don’t rely on catalogues or intermediaries, we work face-to-face with small workshops, family-run businesses, and master artisans. This hands-on approach allows us to discover truly unique pieces that are rarely found elsewhere. Whether it’s a one-of-a-kind carved cabinet, a vintage door turned console, or a hand-painted sideboard with centuries-old motifs – our collection includes items you won’t see in mass-produced ranges. Every item is chosen based on design, wood quality, craftsmanship, and story.

2. Quality You Can Feel
All our furniture is crafted from solid wood, primarily durable mango wood or reclaimed teak sourced from old buildings and structures. These materials are not only robust, but also rich in character and history. In contrast to mass-produced pieces made from MDF or veneer, solid wood offers lasting quality: it ages beautifully, can be repaired, refinished, and even handed down through generations. This kind of longevity not only reduces waste, but also supports a more sustainable and mindful way of furnishing.

3. Handcrafted, Not Mass-Produced
All our pieces are handcrafted – shaped, carved, and finished by skilled artisans using traditional techniques. This manual process brings out subtle variations in each item, making every piece truly one of a kind. The texture of the wood, the carved details, the brush strokes… all reflect the human touch behind the work. Unlike machine-made furniture, this approach requires time, patience, and expertise. It also means fair wages for artisans and careful attention to every stage of the process, values that are reflected in the final product.

4. Fair & Long-Term Partnerships
We believe that furniture made with care should come from relationships built on trust. That’s why we maintain long-term partnerships with small workshops and artisan families, some of whom we’ve collaborated with for over a decade. These partnerships are based on transparency, fair working conditions, and mutual respect. By working directly and over time, we help support stable livelihoods and preserve traditional skills – ensuring that each piece carries not only craftsmanship, but also a responsible origin.

5. Responsible Import, Storage & Distribution
Shipping large, solid wood furniture across continents is no small feat. From rural India to our central warehouse in the Netherlands, every piece is carefully packed, shipped by sea, and handled by us – without middlemen. The logistical effort behind a container full of custom furniture is significant, and we make sure everything is handled to our expectations so you don’t have to deal with surprises later.
True Value Isn’t Cheap – But It Lasts
We’re not part of the fast furniture world – and intentionally so. Our focus is on quality that lasts, materials that matter, and craftsmanship with a story. Every piece connects you to the people and traditions behind it.
